As promised to myself I have started (and finished) another Dear Jane block. I hope this blessed broken ankle brings me some pleasure!

K9 - Scout's Honor

My sewing space set up on the deck - quite comfortable for an afternoon of stitching away.

Late afternoon - as you can see the wine is already poured! I can stitch and enjoy the view................

Here is the completed block - and from start to finish was only three or so little stitching sessions so I am quite pleased with my result.

I have two hand stitching projects on the go at this time. I really have been working diligently on my wool applique flowers and have completed 12/16 blocks. I think I will get them completed before I really get back to the Dear Jane blocks.

Well - it certainly has been a long time since I posted any blocks - although I have still been puttering away at my Dear Jane quilt. I needed to do a bit of housekeeping on my blog before I could even start this post.

I have been working on another hand stitching project and the Dear Jane has been set aside for the past 8-9 months but I am starting to feel like getting back to work at it. I have 50 blocks completed now!!

A couple of weeks ago - I fell/slipped while walking Jenny in the forest - Cypress Trails - and I fractured my ankle. So I am in a boot cast and non weight bearing on crutches until September 9th - at which time I go back to see the doctor and find out what's next. He says this will take 3 months!! So this summer is being spent sitting on the deck with the computer playing some Netflix TV and some hand stitching projects. So that leads to my ability and desire to get back to my Dear Jane. I think it needs a name -- I need to think about that for awhile - but I definitely think I need to give it a name sooner rather than later.

I have completed four blocks since my last post - in 2009!! Good heavens - 2009! I need to get cracking on it. If I only do two blocks a year it will take me 87.5 years to finish the rest of the 175 blocks! I don't think I have that much time! So time to get back into the swing of it.

I usually like to put the names of the block as well but I have the book downstairs and right now it is a bit of an event to get to my quilting room - I can do it but it takes a bit of bumping up and down the stairs on my butt - and it is a slow process. So I will add the names at some later time.

I have not been neglecting my Dear Jane

It has been a very busy year here - with a big house renovation - a new grandbaby and all trips back and forth to Calgary to see the grandbabies!! But I have been puttering away on my Dear Jane.

I completed this block M9 -- Fan Dance.

I am up to 46 blocks now - which is not too bad -LOL. It seems to work out to about 12 -14 blocks a year for me. I really do need to pick up the pace!! I should try doing a triangle block - I have yet to do one and I think it is about time. Most of the block I have done so far are the pieced blocks - so I need to do a few applique blocks as well. I find the pieced blocks are so easy to cut out and prep for taking to my Friday stitch group. I have started a wool applique block of the month and my poor Dear Jane has been put a bit on the back burner at the last few Friday stitches - so I am feeling a bit guilty about not working on the blocks much since about mid October.
Hmmm -- something to put on my New Years Resolution list -LOL!!

A10 - Which Points West

Another block completed. This one I did reverse applique on the centre melon and then pieced the rest of the block together by hand and finally just appliqued the little triangles on top. I think it turned out okay - finished is better than perfect. That is block 44! I seem to be moving along a little faster right now. I just laid out the next block -A12. It has thousands of pieces!! I think that will take a little longer -LOL. I think that will complete the first row for me. I must get Eric to update my website!

After the last block with all those many, many tiny pieces it was nice to do a block that was pretty easy and had just a few straight seams.

This one went together very quickly. This block is number 43. I thought I was doing pretty good with my block count - thinking I had done 43 blocks since I started my Dear Jane journey in March 2007 but I check back in my blog posts and discovered that I started this journey in March 2006! So that is not so quick - 43 blocks in 3 years - less than 15 blocks a year. About 1 block a month - so I really should pick up the pace a bit or even my 10 year goal will not be reached. I will not give up!

A9 Cabin Fever

The date on this picture is October 9th. I thought I had started it months and months ago - so I think all in all the fact that it is finished is pretty good.

I took this block to Seattle to work on while Jim attended his fisheries conference. I quite often take my Dear Jane blocks with me - I find the hotel ironing boards come in quite handy - and it is nice that I don't have to bring my own ironing board along.

I actually worked on the block quite a bit in Seattle - sometimes the blocks come along for a ride and never make it out of the bag!

And here is the finished block.

Cabin Fever.

Cabin Fever -- thats a good name for this block that I just finished while living through the most snowfall in the history of Vancouver!

I am still slowly but surely plodding away at my quilt. This one had many, many pieces - something like 45 or so. I am glad this one is finished. I started one with a few less pieces -- M12. Just a few little short seams - so hopefully it will be done quickly. Maybe I should do a triangle. I haven't done any of those yet.

Happy New Year. Here's to a productive and fruitful 2009. One year to Olympics!

L-11 Caitlin's Rose

This one has certainly taken a long time to finish -- and it has done quite a bit of traveling as well. Back and forth to Calgary a couple of times and to Inuvik and back this past September. Talk about slow going - at this rate I will not make my 10 year deadline!!

I have been busy with other things though I must admit. I also have bought a fair amount of civil war fabrics on my recent shopping frenzy of the summer. So now that it is fall I will hopefully get back to quilting with some commitment on my part. Wash up all my new fabric and get it ready for future blocks. And hopefully the next block won't take 5 months!!!

This is block #39 for me. So that means there are only 186 blocks left to make -LOL

I have started L-11 Caitlin's Rose. I haven't done any applique blocks for a while now - so I should do a few applique blocks. It is nice to have another one finished though - I took it to Calgary with me - didn't do anything on it at all - and finally finished the last border piece at my Friday quilt group. It was a nice little quilt group day as not only did I finish the block but we had a nice lunch for my 50th birthday and Trudi's 65th birthday. And all 5 of us in the group we finally there - we hadn't been all together since October. Dorothy and Barbara both brought little gifts for us from their Panama cruises ( not together) and we had a lovely visit -- along with a bit of stitching.

L-11 Caitin's Rose

I have been running out of my prepped and bagged up blocks so I decided I needed to make up a few more. The first block I start to prep last night was L-11 Caitlin's Rose. As I was laying the template pieces on the fabric to iron I realized that the little diamond shaped pieces were not all the same size -- which they really should have been - or so I thought. So I pulled out the book - which is what I use as a reference when I lay the blocks out to stitch together. Although I print the blocks on the freezer paper using the computer program.

So first thing I realize by putting each little diamond piece on the book pattern is the diamonds are NOT all the same and each diamond -- although they look very similar - are quite different in size and shape and have a specific place in the pattern. So as you can see by the photo I labeled each diamond piece with a couple of letters and then labeled each template piece to match. Then the next thing I discovered was that I had a bunch of extra half square triangles that I couldn't figure out where they were to go -- and the other triangles that I had didn't seem to work. I know that some of the patterns in the book are different than the patterns in the computer program.

So I went to the computer and printed out the block for reference. As you can see the two blocks are quite different. I had to find the right layout for the diamonds again - but it seems to be the same as the book. But this one has four more half square triangles and a much smaller centre block. I think it looks a little more similar to the original quilt block. Brenda redrafted a few of the blocks - so for all you Dear Janer's out there that are using both the computer program and the book - remember that some of the blocks in the book are different than the CD. I found that for some of the blocks in the program there are a couple of different versions of the block as well. Fortunately I found this out before I started sewing the diamonds to the half square triangles and they were not aligned properly and the block didn't quite fit together. When you look at the block and the diamond shaped you don't think they are different sizes.

This one was a long time coming!!!

I can't even remember when I started it but I finished it yesterday. Great to have it finished. I was having some major issues today with the scanner and such but I was able to overcome them with only minor frustrations -LOL - although if you asked Jim he would tell you I was a bit more frustrated than I admit.

I need to get Eric to update the blocks on my Dear Jane virtual quilt. I think he is about 4 behind. I think I am up to 35 now -- but who's counting!!

Boy this has sure taken a long time!!!!!!

I completed it on Saturday while I was visiting with my Friday stitch group. I started the next one as well which also has an awful lot of pieces. Hopefully it doesn't take so long to get the next one finished.

I can't believe how long it took to get this one finished. Part of it was we had to move my little table and lamp for the Christmas tree -- although I should have had it finished long before December 18th!! Anyway it is done and I am happy!!!

I was able to finish this block Friday night. I doesn't have that many pieces - so it was a lot quicker to finish then the last block. I have only about 3 blocks in prepped in baggies right now -- so I have been doing a bit of cutting up of the freezer paper blocks and such this week. I will start another block tonight as we watch the final two episodes of The Sopranos. I am going away for a 4 day retreat next weekend. I should be able to have the next block finished for next Monday - as I will be gone from Friday - Monday night ( I'm so excited!! I just can't hide it!!)

One, Two Buckle My Shoe

Here you go Karen! It was completed at 10:05 Pacific Mountain Time.

For everyone else - Karen (from Passionate Quilter) and I had a challenge to complete one DJ block by Saturday night. This is the block I took to Oregon and worked on a bit at Rockaway Beach, though there was still quite a bit left to sew. The block that Karen was sewing was H-3 - a very complicated looking block - one that I have not done yet. So her challenge looks a little more difficult than mine.

I am quite excited that mine is finished and now on to the next challenge - hey Karen :)))

I still need to scan the photo in and get posted to my virtual DJ webpage.

I have been busy working this week (something I think should be banned!!) and just started taking the pictures for my Oregon "shop hop" I will be posting those pictures in the next day or two.

Time to get back at it!!

It has been such a long time since I worked on any of my DJ blocks. I had a bunch prepared and sitting in little baggies just waiting -- I don't know why it has been so long. I hope that I don't have too many long stretches of time off my DJ or I will never get it completed. Anyway I started back on Friday with -- "One two buckle my shoe" Boy there are a lot of pieces in this one!!

When I was out at the fabric by the pound sale in August I bought a few bits of fabric for the DJ quilt as well. They didn't have much in the way of the civil war era fabric for sale there but I did find one nice little collection. I also had bought a couple of fat quarters in my summer travels as well.

I am getting quite a collection of fabrics. I hate to buy the fat quarters because you really only need a fat eighth to make a block - and sometimes even less. It is very difficult to find fat eighths. I see there are a couple of shops in Oregon that have civil war fabrics and maybe they have fat eighths. Another good reason to shop :)))

I finished this block last night while watching Canadian Idol.

Today I took a pigma pen and wrote the letter and number of the block on the back in a seam in very small writing. I think I read somewhere that someone else was doing that. Good idea - for assembling the quilt 10 years from now! Although I am moving along fairly well. This is block number 35 for me.

I also finished these blocks in Tofino. I actually sewed the four blocks of E-10 together on the machine at home before going and then just appliqued the melon pieces on top. The four squares are quite simple and large and easy to stitch on the machine. The block needs to be cut down to the 5" unfinished size yet.

I am going to try to figure out how I can link my Picasa web album to this blog and have the pictures on the side bar. I saw that on a blog somewhere - so more technology to figure out!!

I thought I would post this one first, since it took the longest. The problem with these darn blocks - which I keep saying over and over - is they don't look like as much work as they really are!

So this one will go down in history as the one that I spent the most time on in Tofino. I am glad I am getting back to doing them. I will have to get Eric to update my Virtual Dear Jane quilt as well.

Jim and I -- and the dog - are heading off to Tofino on Saturday. I have 8 blocks all cut out and ready to be stitched to take along with me. I hope to get them all done!! Which will be amazing for me if I do. I have been quite neglectful of my DJ quilt these past two months. So now it is time to get a few blocks done. Wish me luck. We will be gone one week. I don't think I will be able to access the internet much while we are gone. There is a little internet cafe in Tofino, but we will be staying in a house on the beach and there is no TV, or internet at the house. So lots of time to sit and stitch!!

It is hard to believe I am finished this block and moving forward with my DJ quilt again. It has been quite awhile since I worked on it.

I have been busy today cutting out blocks for stitching together while we are in Tofino the second week of June. I just cut out a block that had 45 pieces!! A single 5" square block that has 45 pieces!!! Can you imagine. What was I thinking?

It has been quite a while since I posted on my DJ blog. I have not forgotten - I have just been busy working on a few other things. Plus all the things that have been happening with the job has put me back as well.

This block has been started and has been sitting just like this on my little DJ table for - I can't remember how long -- but a long time. So I thought I had better put up a post - to remind myself to get back at it. So I will finish up the quilting on the baby quilt and I will get back at it -- soon, I will finish this block this week!!

The tale of two blocks - the right and wrong

This block is called C-2 "Streak of Lightning" I completed it last night. The inside diamond shaped are pieced but the two outside diamonds are appliqued on top when it is all stitched together. I used the Roxanne's glue to hold the two appliqued pieces in place instead of pins. It does work well. I had never used it before, although I had bought a small bottle of it not that long ago. After I finished it I brought it up to the scanner to be scanned, and -- I realized that I had appliqued the two top diamonds on facing in the wrong direction. So ---- I had to take them off, finding that the Roxanne's glue really did hold them on well. And I had to re-stitch them! I had a little wine spot on the muslin so I had to give it a little wash and iron after I finished it, so the edges are a little frayed -- and then I had to do it all again. So this block is a little worse for wear!

So here it is finished today. This one is scanned in - rather than the photo. The scanned image is so much better than a photo. So I will email the photo to Eric so he can update my Virtual DJ.

I am again having a bit of trouble with Picasa upload. That seems to be the theme of this blog. I am not able to write any text to go along with the photo, every time I start the picture disappears. So the text will have to be in another post.

This was a tricky block because of all the bias edges to be sewn. I do like the striped fabric in this block. So it was a bit slow going with all the bias edges. Finished it tonight watching the Canucks beat the San Jose Sharks 2-1 in overtime. The home team is doing well -- working towards a good run into the playoffs. Big smile!!

Of course I can't remember if I posted these blocks yet. But I have scanned in all my blocks and I think the pictures of the blocks from the scanner and much better than the digital camera. The reason I have scanned in the blocks is because ----- drum roll!! --- Eric (middle child) is making me a DJ webpage! He is making a grid for all the blocks and it will be set up so that when you click on the little block in the table a big block pops up. It will be so cool. It is still under construction. It has taken him hours and hours of typing. I think by the time he is finished he will know the Dear Jane blocks of by heart. So I am pretty excited and I will post a link as soon as it is ready to go.

I am going to look into some sort of a photo spread sheet so the blocks can all be viewed in the layout of where they belong and I can track my progress a bit better - or clearer. I know nothing about computer codes so it will be a bit of a challenge for me but I think it will be a good challenge.

This block is A-6 UNCLE HOMER

Good block to start with. It could easily be done on the sewing machine as the pieces are quite big. I stitched it by hand the same as the others. I am going to go watch the Grammy awards and work on my next block. Jim has gone to Portland for the week so I am alone this week. Unfortunately I have to work all week -- I would have gone to Portland if I didn't have to work and I could have taken my DJ blocks there. Although it seems that when I take quilting with me on holiday I never actually do any work on it!

This is a nice little block to do - fairly simple but with some tiny pieces. I am almost caught up posting blocks that have been completed before I started the blog. Next time it will be more recent blocks. I am just working on one right now with the tiniest little squares I have yet to sew.

This is such a pretty block and I love the fabric I used for it. Some fairly tiny pieces in it but not too difficult. It is the curved pieced blocks that are the tricky ones!!

Now Picasa seems to be working today, the way it used, before the change over. When I go to publish it is actually uploading the post right onto my blog and opening the blog right away like it did before. It hasn't done that since beta came online. I sure hope that the issues have been resolved now.

So far to date this block was the most difficult to do. I did it all in pieces and sewed them together, rather than one background piece and four melons appliqued on top. It was very hard to do all those curved seams. But it is finished and it turned out okay I think -- Better finished than perfect!!

This was a fairly easy and straight forward block to do. Fairly big pieces compared to some. It looks like alot of my blocks are in browns but they really aren't. I have quite a few blue and green and pink etc. But the colours will be the more muted civil war colours.

This block was fairly easy to do. The outside edge of each piece was appliqued in place but I actually sewed the inside seam on the machine, once each heart edge was appliqued in place.

This block was a little tricky to do with the curved seams. I like the fabric - sort of looks the colour of sweet potatoes.

The second step

After the freezer paper templates are cut out I iron them onto the wrong side of the fabric. I then draw around each piece with my mechanical pencil and I also use a ruler and draw a 1/4 inch cutting line. It is an extra step to draw the cutting line, but I like that I end up with a fairly even seam that way. My freehand cutting skills are pretty poor.

The pieces all go back in the little plastic sandwich bags and are now ready for whenever I can get to stitching them together. There is the little strip of paper with the block name and number in the bag as well. At the time when I get the blocks ready to stitch I use the book and look up the block and see how the pieces go together. I use both the CD and the book to put the blocks together.

The fact that this post showed up is a complete shock. I just did the old "Blog This" in Picasa and poof it was here -- very unusual. I also decide to change this blog template as well.

This block is hand pieced and the handle of the basket is appliqued in place.

The first step

The first thing I do is print the patterns out on the freezer paper. I am able to print two different pattern out on one page. I do this by adjusting the top and bottom margins in the DJ program, under "Page setup" The top margins is narrow (0.118) and the bottom margin is wide (5). Then I print one pattern and then flip the paper and print another pattern. Took me quite a few months to find out how to do that -- again the DJ digest was where I got the information. Great tips.

After printing out the pattern I mark on the pieces whether the piece is white fabric (W) or coloured fabric (C) then I cut apart all the pieces. I chose the colour of fabric I am going to use for the block. All my white fabric is muslin. I then put the pieces and the fabric in a small sandwich baggie. Ready for the next step.

I make sure I have put the name of the blocks in the bag with the fabric and pieces. At this point it would be almost impossible to tell which blocks were in the bags without them being labeled. What a production that would be!

This was a fairly simple block to applique, all the pieces are fairly large and nice easy round curves.

This block was quite difficult to get the melons and centre looking good and symetrical, and it still looks a little off centre. After I did the block (twice) I read the hints and tips on the Dear Jane website and realized that I should have reverse appliqued the centre piece - that would have been much easier -- that taught me to always read the tips and hints before making the block.

This block is the one block that I used the sewing machine to piece the four squares together. They are fairly big square compared to most other DJ pieces. The squares are about 2 1/2 inches each. I then hand appliqued the melons. It is a fairly easy block to get right.

Each block is 4 1/2 inches finished ( 5 inches unfinished). The blocks are either hand pieced or hand appliqued - or a combination of both. Crystal Star is hand pieced but the small melons in each corner are hand appliqued on after the block is pieced. There are alot of melons in this quilt!

My "Stuff"

I have a bunch of "stuff" that I have decided I need to make my quilt. Some of it is necessary - some is not. I find the computer program a very valuable tool. I print the outline block patterns onto the freezer paper with the program. I use the book when I am re-assembling the blocks - for colour and fabric placement etc. The little iron and ironing mat helps to iron those small seams after stitching. (instead of finger pressing). A "Dear Jane" bag to carry all my supplies and also the other bag holds many quilting notions required - scissors, thread, pencils, Dear Jane rulers, etc. It has taken a number of months to gather all this "stuff" - and figure out exactly what "stuff" was really needed. I think I have what I need now!

I have decided to start this blog to document my "Dear Jane" Journey. I started the Dear Jane Quilt in March of 2006. The main reason I started this quilt was because after I started my original blog and saw many different quilting blogs I found a few quilters and their Dear Jane quilt - Cathi in Ireland - was the one that inspired me the most. So I ordered the book and CD from the Dear Jane website. I also order two packages of freezer paper for the printer. I have 24 blocks finished so far and I thought it would be good to document the progress on a blog instead of on paper. I will begin by posting the blocks I have completed so far.
